For the people who do not believe in the flu vaccine there are alternative and preventative measures you can take. The following herbs have a 3000 to 5000 year history of preventing and curing disease. These herbs should be used daily especially during the cold flu season months (Oct.-May.) or as soon as symptoms start appearing. For the prevention of the flu or cold or curtailing full-blown development of symptoms you can take the following herbs as directed on the herb label.

Echinacea is effective as an herbal supplement in that it effectively stimulates the immune system, which when strengthened responds effectively to viruses plus there are clinical studies claiming that it could prevent colds and flu. Echinacea is also used for infections of the ear, cold sores, yeast infection, viral infections as well as other infections of the body.

Garlic boosts the health of your immune system, and a number of clinical studies have found that regular doses of garlic help to ward off viruses like the flu and various strains of rhinovirus, the kind responsible for the common cold. It is known to have antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal activity. It is also said to help with heart disease (including atherosclerosis), high cholesterol, high blood pressure cancer and much more.

Andrographis is used in Ayurvedic medicine in India. Traditionally used to treat upper respiratory infections and sinusitis, andrographis was shown in a recent study to reduce the symptoms of coughs, sore throats, headache and fever. Andrographis may also help reduce the severity and duration of the flu, according to a 2003 study. Andrographis finds and kills harmful bacteria and viruses without destroying beneficial bacteria such as probiotics. It also stimulates and strengthens the immune system.

A healthy immune system is the best defense against all illness.
