1. Nutritional Counseling

Dr. Kevin Kilday PhD, Dr. of Natural Health at Holistic Health Center (HHC) works with an individual to assess his or her usual dietary and identify areas where change is needed. Dr. Kilday provides information, educational materials, support, and follow-up to help the individual make and maintain the needed dietary changes.

Dr. Kilday begins with an interview in which he asks questions about a person’s typical food intake. Dr. Kilday will ask the client how often he or she consumes certain food groups. For example, he will ask a person how many servings of dairy products, fruits, vegetables, grains and cereals, meats, or fats he or she consumes in a typical day, week, or month. An individual may be instructed to keep a written record of the amounts of all foods and beverages consumed over a given period of time. Dr. Kilday can then use the food records to analyze actual energy and nutrient intake.

The initial dietary assessment and interview provide the basis for identifying eating behaviors that need to be changed, prioritizing the changes and problem solving as to how to make the changes. Sometimes a person already has a good idea of what dietary changes are needed, but may require help making the changes. Dr. Kilday will help educate a person on the health effects of different dietary choices. For example, changing eating behaviors may mean involving others, purchasing different foods, planning ahead for social events, or bringing special foods to work. Some common barriers to changing eating habits include inconvenience, social gatherings, food preferences, or lack of knowledge or time.

Family members are encouraged to attend nutrition consulting sessions with the client, especially if they share responsibility for food selection and preparation. Although the individual must make food choices and take responsibility for dietary changes, having the support and understanding of family and friends makes success more likely. In making dietary changes, each individual’s situation and background must be carefully considered. Factors that affect food decisions include an individual’s ethnic background, religion, group affiliation, socioeconomic status, and world view.

Please keep in mind that we are not talking about a weight loss program even though we do offer like programs but we are talking about making dietary changes that will directly affect your current weight and/or a specific health condition such as cancer which is one of our specialties. Please realize that 80% of our immune system is in our gut. Correct the immune system and you can achieve optimal health. There are many specific diets for specific health conditions and Dr. Kilday can educate you about them and make suggestions.

Once we have identified a dietary change, vitamins and herbs will be added to not only rebuild the immune system but to address specific health conditions. Alternative Cancer Treatment Supplements and Protocols

There are a variety of supplement protocols but the following is a good overall regimen for anyone preventing or battling cancer.  The recommended supplements are of pharmaceutical grade and should provide healthier results.

Please keep in mind that the following supplements are just the basics and only part of the Winning Against Cancer Program but this is a good start. Once your specific cancer has been identified more vitamins and herbs will be added.

2. CoQ10
This natural energy-producer and powerful antioxidant is proving to be an important cancer fighter. New research has found that CoQ10 is helpful for colon cancer, breast cancer and melanoma. What to Take: We recommend 200 – 600 mg of CoQ10 a day.

3. Probiotics with prebiotics
These friendly bacteria can decrease fecal enzymes associated with formation of cancer-causing compounds in the intestines. They can bind to substances that cause genetic mutations to intestinal cells. They stimulate enzymes that inactivate cancer-causing substances. Probiotics can also help support and stimulate the immune system indirectly and directly throughout the body, which is why they’ve been linked to a reduced risk for cancers other than colon cancer, such as bladder cancer. Look for a probiotic supplement that includes prebiotics in addition to beneficial bacteria. Think of prebiotics as food and housing for probiotics. These are nutritional substances such as inulin, a soluble fiber, that help probiotics grow and colonize inside your intestines. In one study, volunteers were fed a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics, or placebo, for eight weeks. A wide range of indicators of colon cancer risk were measured. Those taking the probiotics with prebiotics had less DNA damage and a lower rate of cell proliferation in biopsies taken from their colons. They also had lower levels of cancer-causing mutagens in their feces.
What to Take: We recommend a shelf-stable probiotic with 10 billion CFU (colony-forming units) count per dose.

4. Beta Glucan
These chains of sugar molecules have the ability to enhance your immune system and help it to attack cancer cells. Beta glucan is most often derived from the cell walls of baker’s yeast, or from mushrooms such a shiitake and maitake. In Japan, extracts containing various types of beta glucan have been used to successfully assist in treating cancer patients for the last 20 years.
Beta glucan seems to have the unique ability to stick to cancer cells and “tag” them to make it easier for the immune system to recognize the cancer cells as foreign invaders that need to be destroyed. Beta glucan does provide some immune system boost on its own, but it seems to work best when used along with other forms of cancer therapy, such as monoclonal  antibodies or interferon.
What to Take: We recommend about 100 mg a day of Beta 1,3/1,6 D-glucan, a form proven effective at stimulating immunity.

5. Resveratrol 
This powerful anti-aging nutrient helps to preserve normal cell cycle regulation, which is an important function in dealing with DNA damage. If cell cycle regulation is defective, mutations in the cells’ DNA may result in cancer. Resveratrol has been found to induce cell cycle arrest for a time following DNA damage, in order to allow for DNA repair or activation of processes leading to cell death, should the damage be irreparable.
Resveratrol also helps to regulate enzymes. It “upregulates” certain enzymes that break down toxic substances in the body, so it promotes the excretion of these harmful chemicals.
What to Take: We recommend about 400 mg a day of standardized trans-resveratrol.

6. Vitamin D
New research suggests that having an optimal blood level of Vitamin D could cut your cancer risk by as much as 60%! Vitamin D can help activate certain proteins that suppress tumor growth and development, and help prevent as many as 16 different types of cancer, including lung, pancreas, breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Vitamin D increases the self-destruction of mutated cells, reduces the spread and reproduction of cancer cells, and reduces the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, an important step in the growth and spread of cancerous tumors. Research shows 40-70% of Americans have sub-optimal blood levels of vitamin D.
What to Take: Some people need 2,000 – 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day, or even more, to stay at a good blood level of to 40 to 60 ng/mL (100 – 150 nmol/L).

7. Green Tea 
An extract of the main active ingredient in green tea, EGCG, slows blood vessel formation in tumors, reducing the rate at which they can grow and spread. Like resveratrol, green tea extract can also regulate cell division and growth, and cause programmed cell death in DNA-damaged cells. Some of the cancers that green tea can face down include prostate, esophageal, bladder, cervical, pancreatic, ovarian, lymphoma and leukemia. Green tea is also active against human papilloma virus (HPV) a sexually transmitted virus associated with cervical and anal cancer and warts.
What to Take: We recommend about 450 mg a day of a standardized green tea extract.

8. Fish Oil
Greater intake of omega-3s has been associated with a reduced risk for cancer. By helping to stabilize the immune system, fish oil may have multiple anti-cancer effects, including regulating cell proliferation, inducing damaged cells to die, preventing blood vessel growth in tumors and helping to prevent the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body.
What to Take: Dosages of 1,200 – 5,000 mg a day are recommended.

9. Curcumin
This component of turmeric has emerged as a leading cancer fighter. Curcumin can disrupt cancer cells in several stages of development. It, too, causes programmed cell death and inhibits new blood vessel growth into tumors. It seems to work best against colon cancer, and in some animal studies, was as good as certain chemotherapy drugs at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.
What to Take: Dosages up to 8,000 mg a day for three months have been used with no toxicity.

10. Garlic Extract 
Garlic can increase activity of toxin-neutralizing enzymes and decrease activity of toxin-activating enzymes in the intestines. Garlic also helps prevent cancer-causing DNA changes and promotes the death of damaged intestinal cells.

What to Take: As much as 7,200 mg a day of garlic extract has been taken for up to six months without side effects.

20 Cancer Fighting Herbs with research studies

Here are twenty herbs that just might help your fight against cancer.

1 ASTRAGALUS (Huang Qi): A Chinese herb; an immune system booster, known to stimulate body’s natural production of interferon. It also helps the immune system identify rogue cells. Work with the herb in both cancer and AIDS cases has been encouraging. The MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas conducted research showing that taking Astragalus when having Radiotherapy doubled survival times.

2 BERBERIS FAMILY (e.g. Podophyllum peltanum): Slow active purgative. Research has shown these herbs to have a strong action against cancer and they have been used with many cancers, especially Ovarian cancer.

3 BLOOD ROOT (Sanguinaria canadensis): Research shows consistent anti-neoplastic activity. It is effective against cancer tumors, and can shrink them; and has proven useful with sarcomas.

4 BUTCHERS BROOM (Ruscus aculeatus): The active ingredients of this herb has been found to be the ruscogenins which have tumor-shrinking and anti-estrogenic abilities. Thus its use in the treatment of breast cancer.

5 CAT’S CLAW (Uncaria tormentosa): An adaptogen and powerful immuno-stimulant, it enhances the white cells clean up process (phagocytosis). It is an excellent companion to astragalus, curcumin and echinacea. Research indicates it can reduce tumor size, particularly with skin cancers. It also helps reduce the side-effects of chemo and radiotherapy.

6 CHAPARRAL (Larrea mexicana): Cancer Watch covered a major research study from the US which heaped praise on this herb. It appears to boost the immune system, stop metastases and reduce tumor size. Seems especially interesting with breast cancer. It is also an anti-oxidant and anti-microbial, with low toxicity.

7 CURCUMIN (Turmeric): This spice (Curcuma longa or Turmeric root) has been shown to have significant anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activity. That alone seems enough for certain hospitals in America to consider using it in the treatment of polyps and colon cancer. However new research shows that it can both shrink cancer tumors and inhibit blood supply growth to tumors. It is a powerful antioxidant with liver protective benefits, and outperformed several anti-inflammatory drugs without side-effects in research.

8 DANG SHEN ROOT (Codonopsis pilosula): Increases both the white blood cell and red blood cell levels, so can be extremely helpful to patients having chemotherapy and radiotherapy, or to patients whose cancer diminishes levels of either.

9 ECHINACEA: Another known immune system booster, it gained a populist reputation in treating colds. There is research on its helpfulness with brain tumors apart from its abilities to increase the levels of certain immune white cells in the body.

10 FEVERFEW: This herb caused a storm when research from Rochester University in New York showed it to be more effective than the drug cytarabine in killing leukemia cells. The US Food and Drug Agency put the active ingredient, parthenolide, on to its fast track program. Nothing has yet been heard. But then, the FDA has never approved a herb for use as a cancer treatment.

11 GOLDENSEAL: One cause of stomach cancer can be the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This burrows into the mucous lining of the stomach to hide from gastric acids, and then causes irritation, acid reflux, ulcers and even cancer. Goldenseal is generally anti-microbial and is used in the Caribbean and South East Asia against parasites. Goldenseal, helped by the mineral Bismuth, will kill Helicobacter pylori. Vets seem to know this, even if doctors don’t.

12 MILK THISTLE: Known for years to be helpful to the liver, this herb has now been shown to be capable of protecting the liver during chemotherapy. Research in America showed that leukemia patients who took milk thistle had reduced liver toxicity and chemo side-effects. There is a little evidence that it has its own anti-cancer activity too.

13 PAU DARCO: This tree bark was original thought to be a strong anti-cancer agent, but then its actions were clarified as strongly anti-bacterial, anti-yeast and anti-microbial. That alone might be enough in some cases of cancer cause. But new research on the differing ingredients has shown the quinoids possess immune strengthening abilities and seem to help in cases of blood and lymph cancers.

14 RED CLOVER: Research from a number of centers including the Royal Marsden has shown its potential as a part of a treatment program against estrogen-driven cancers, from breast to prostate. One active ingredient in the so-called Herb of Hippocrates is the anti-estrogen Genistein.

15 SHEEPs SORRELL: Used in Essiac and other herbal remedies it is a cleanser and aids healthy tissue regeneration. There is some suggestion from research that it helps normalize damaged cells and tissue. It is also a highly praised ´vermifuge´ – intestinal worms have little or no resistance to this herb.

16 SKULLCAP (Scutellaria barbata): Research has shown action against many cancer types, for example against cancers of the lung, stomach and intestines.

17 SUTHERLANDIA (Cancer Bush): Peer reviewed research studies indicate that this herb is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-fungal. It boosts the immune system and inhibits Tumor Necrosis Factor, known to drive wasting in cancer patients.

18 THOROWAX, or HARES EAR (Bulpleurum scorzoneraefolium): Research has shown its ability to enhance the production of natural interferon and it seems especially useful in bone cancer.

19 WHEATGRASS: One of the top private hospitals in South East Asia extols the benefits of freshly juiced wheatgrass. One shot gives you the chlorophyll of some 12 or more kilograms of broccoli. It acts as a blood purifier, and liver and kidney cleansing agent. After two weeks of daily use, blood and tissue oxygen levels improve, as does circulation. And oxygen is the enemy of the cancer cell, as Otto Warburg told the world.

20 WORMWOOD: Another Chinese Herb, this has outperformed certain anti-malaria drugs and is now used by the aid agencies. It is strongly anti-microbial and anti-yeast and can be used as an effective part of an anti-candida diet. Also certain cancer treatments cause excesses of yeasts to form (for example, in Leukemia treatment) threatening the patients health further. Excess yeasts are even felt by some cancer experts to be one of the causes of cancer. However, in recent research Wormwood has been shown to have direct anti-cancer properties.

Cancer and the Acid Alkaline Diet

One of the most important points of the acid alkaline diet is that cancer can be prevented and reversed by applying the principles of the diet. Although these statements have caused some controversy in the world of health and wellness, many people credit the use of the acid alkaline diet in reversing their cancer and improving their overall level of health.

Cancer is not a sickness or a disease as commonly thought. It is an effect of the metabolic acids that are built up in the blood and then released into the tissues. Cancer is actually an acidic liquid that spills into the cells, tissues and organs. It is not a mutation of the cells.

No condition happens without a cause. There is a clear and direct cause for cancer and that is over acidity. Diseases like cancer are due to systemic acidosis, which is extremely low pH (below 7.4). Any pH below 7.0 is considered acidic, and the lower the pH is in a person’s body the higher the acidity level.

At the cellular level, your cells consume the food that you eat and produce metabolic acids. Those acids are normally expelled by the body through sweat or urine. When you consume a vast amount of acidic foods and lead a lifestyle that produces even more acidity, your body does not know what to do with the rest of the acid waste. When you eat highly acidic foods on a regular basis, your body simply does not have enough energy to get rid of the excess acids. They collect in the body, and create disruptions at the cellular level.

Metabolic acids are first kept in the blood and then they are kept in the tissues. When acid is kept in the tissue, it causes sickness, disease and cancerous tissues. Cancer is the acidic liquid from metabolism that pools in the body. It affects the cells around it and, like a rotten apple in a barrel the effects spread from cell to cell causing disease.

Cancer is not made of mutated cells. The cells themselves do not change form but they are limited in their function due to the presence of excess metabolic acid. Cancer cells are actually normal cells that have become highly acidic. Tumors form in areas where the metabolic acid is becoming rampant and affecting cellular function. The tumors themselves are not the problem, but are just signs of what is going wrong in that part of the body. When cancer metastasizes, it is a sign of the acidic condition moving to other cells and making them acidic as well.

Cancer is not something that people get out of the blue. Cancer forming in the body is a sign of the choices that we make in what we eat, what we drink and how we live. An alkaline lifestyle that focuses on an alkaline diet and other calming behaviors will be much less likely to produce cancer, if it does at all. An acidic lifestyle and diet will be full of the pains of the buildup of metabolic acid which can lead to cancer.

That is exciting news because it means that cancer is preventable and treatable. A cancer patient can start taking steps toward reversing the effects of cancer and preventing the spread of it. His or her alkaline centered diet may be more aggressive than someone who is just trying to better their overall health. However, by applying the principles of the acid alkaline diet they can effectively reduce, control and eliminate cancer from their bodies.

 

The Acid Alkaline Diet

The acid alkaline diet is an exciting new way for people to take control of their health. By lowering your dependence on acid producing foods and raising your intake of alkali foods you can attain optimum health. The pH scale is from 1 to 14, 1 being very acidic and 14 being very alkaline. The blood in the human bloodstream tends to run slightly alkaline at 7.35 – 7.45.  Below or above this range means symptoms and disease.  A pH of 7.0 is neutral.  A pH below 7.0 is acidic.  A pH above 7.0 is alkaline. All foods, beverages and in fact everything we put into our bodies will breakdown into acid or alkali. The body will store and eliminate excess amounts of these things respectively. An excess amount of acid stored in the body will cause the blood to cluster in the bloodstream, causing fatigue and trauma to the body on the cellular level. When there is so much shutdown going on in the body, the immune system will be lowered allowing disease and illness to enter. By keeping the balance of the pH level in the body at 7.35 you can ensure good health. Eating more alkaline foods and avoiding overly acidic foods a proper balance can be maintained. Researching which foods are alkalizing and which ones are acidifying will give you the power to make informed choices. An acidic pH can occur from, an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reactions or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients.  The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using alkaline minerals.  If the diet does not contain enough minerals to compensate, a buildup of acids in the cells will occur.

An acidic balance will:  decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease its ability to repair damaged cells, decrease its ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness.

Acidosis is what results from too much acid in the body. The reason acidosis is more common in our society is mostly due to the typical American diet, which is far too high in acid producing animal products like meat, eggs and dairy, and far too low in alkaline producing foods like fresh vegetables.  Additionally, we eat acid producing processed foods like white flour and sugar and drink acid producing beverages like coffee and soft drinks.  We use too many drugs, which are acid forming; and we use artificial chemical sweeteners like aspartame, which are poison and extremely acid forming.  One of the best things we can do to correct an overly acid body is to clean up the diet and lifestyle.

To maintain health, the diet should consist of 60% alkaline forming foods and 40% acid forming foods.  To restore health, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods.

Generally, alkaline forming foods include: most fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs and seasonings, and seeds and nuts.

Generally, acid forming foods include: meat, fish, poultry, eggs, grains, and legumes.

The following chart is for those trying to “adjust” their body pH.  The pH scale is from 0 to 14, with numbers below 7 acidic (low on oxygen) and numbers above 7 alkaline.  An acidic body is a sickness magnet.  What you eat and drink will impact where your body’s pH level falls.  Balance is Key!!!

4. Juicing – A Must in Prevention and Cancer Care

 

Why should cancer patients juice?

Juicing can make it easier for your body to absorb nutrients from fruits and vegetables; it can also help boost your immune system, eliminate toxins from your body, aid digestion, and assist in weight loss. People don’t have the time or don’t like to consume regular fruits and vegetables, however if you want to get more creative with your diet, then juicing can add variety as well as make it easier to digest the nutrients that you need on a daily basis. Some people prefer juicing because they don’t like eating whole fruits and vegetables. For people with cancer, it specifically helps if your sense of taste has changed, you are experiencing dry mouth, or if you have trouble swallowing whole foods.

 

How do I get started?

  • It is preferable to use a juicer rather than a blender.
  • Getting a juicer that keeps the peel and pulp in the juice is healthier because there are a lot of nutrients in the peel and pulp.
  • Fresh juices are better than store-bought juices.
  • Try to get produce without holes or bruises.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before juicing.

Juicing for Those with Cancer

The simplest way to get the vast amount of living foods required by the body to heal cancer is to begin juicing fresh vegetables and fruits every day. Along with being an excellent way to bring nutrients into the body, juicing also has an alkalizing and oxygenating effect on your cells as well which has been discussed as being very important in cancer care. When you drink fresh juice you will immediately feel hydrated and energized, and since juice requires very little by way of digestion, the vitamins and minerals are utilized almost instantly by the body.

There is a substantial difference between drinking fresh juice compared to a processed juice product which has been pasteurized as this process uses heat to kill the bacteria, but it also kills all of the enzymes and most of the nutrients as well, and if you have cancer, it is these enzymes and vital nutrients that your body is in desperate need of.

Many people also question the point of drinking the juice of the fruits and vegetables as opposed to eating the whole produce, and the reason is that by increasing your intake to at least 10 servings per day you are going to provide your body with an abundance of nutrients to function properly and fight off illness. Juicing will allow you to increase the overall servings without overtaxing your digestion system.

 

What Should I Juice?

Vegetables– cruciferous vegetables are rich in cancer- fighting nutrients, these include several carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin); vitamins C, E, and K; folate; and minerals. In addition, cruciferous vegetables contain a group of substances known as glucosinolates, which are sulfur-containing chemicals. These chemicals are responsible for the pungent aroma and bitter flavor that cruciferous vegetables possess. They include arugula, bok choy, broccoli (include the stems), cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collard greens, radishes. Other vegetables that are great to include in your recipes include cucumber, celery, carrots and beets.

Carrots – Carrot juice contains 20 different vitamins such as vitamin A in the form of carotene, along with vitamins C, D, E, K, B1 and B6, and minerals including biotin, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, organic sodium, plus lots of trace minerals. Carrots are also rich in phytonutrients, including lutein, lycopene, antioxidants, alpha, beta, and gamma carotenes, zeaxanthin, and xanthophylls. Perhaps one of the most interesting compounds found within carrot juice is falcarinol, which is believed by scientists to help hinder the development of cancer cells as well as stop fungal diseases from spreading. Many people argue that carrots are too high in sugar to juice but the catch is that they are loaded with cancer fighting properties and the sugar takes those properties directly into the cancer cells.

Chlorophyll from greens– Some of the most nutrient dense foods to include into your diet are are leafy greens and wheatgrass. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in green plants, and is considered the “blood of the plants,” due to the similarity to our blood in molecular structure. Drinking juice made from greens can contain up to 70% chlorophyll. When we have access to chlorophyll, our bodies are able to manufacture high-quality red blood cells which transport oxygen throughout the body. People who follow the Standard American Diet are in desperate need of the cleansing and detoxification which can be obtained with chlorophyll. Chlorophyll can also help to mobilize heavy metals that have accumulated in the body, and is one of the greatest food substances for cleansing the bowel & other elimination systems (liver and the blood) and it also is instrumental in transporting more oxygen to the body and the brain. Look to leafy greens to add that chlorophyll such as spinach, kale, wheatgrass, parsley, Swiss chard, mustard greens, beet greens.

Researchers at Harvard University found that younger women who ate two or more servings of carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables a day (including oranges, broccoli, carrots, romaine lettuce, and spinach) had an 18% lower risk breast women who ate fewer than four servings a week. There is another study that found that the risk of breast cancer was 221% lower for women who consumed the highest levels of beta-carotene compared to women who ate the lowest levels.
